It was a double whammy this weekend. Not only were we blessed with two lots of wardrobe changes per finalist, we also found out that Cheryl has not one, but TWO stylists! You know what they say about too many cooks…  Her dress looked like something fashioned by the local primary school kids. Removing the ghastly sleeve and the messy black corsage – which, by the way, made her hips look twice the size – was all it would have taken. Come on Cheryl, your public want couture, not costume!

Although Dannii’s dress was practically slit to the crotch (thank goodness for that desk to shield our innocent eyes) her style was pretty much flawless. Not liking the hair so much this week, though.

Danyl showed promise, looking good in simple jeans and a t-shirt. Did his performance really need to be   accessorised with fire-dancers? Ok, Brian Friedman, we get that his song was ‘Relight my Fire’ – the song title was our first clue. Danyl’s second outfit unfortunately let him down. Does no one own an iron back there in wardrobe?

What on earth did they style Lloyd in this week? Was that a bib/shirt? And why was he allowed to go on stage with said shirt hanging down by his knees? Some weeks, I weep for what was and what could have been and this week I was crying a river. The morning suit with the skinny tie… dear, oh dear.

Both of Olly’s outfits were laughable. Surely, by week eight our finalists should be falling into their own style niches, and the show’s stylists should be working to fine tune this. In the beginning, the force was strong with this one, but Olly’s wardrobe seems to be in reverse. At least this week there was a waistcoat to cover his gaping-shirt malfunction.

Joe. Vanilla Joe. Don’t get me wrong, I think Joe’s a sweetheart, but his clothes are just so blah. It’s like wardrobe forget about him every week and just stick him in whatever is left. I guarantee that most of the cameramen will be better dressed than he is.

Stacey is the one remaining contestant with any oomph left in that bland wardrobe vortex; if it wasn’t for her adding a bit of sparkle and glam, that stage would be a style abyss – especially now Jedward have sadly departed. She looked stunning for both her performances.

In the naughty corner this week…

The X Factor stylists. Top marks for Stacey, but you have other acts you should be concentrating on.

Sunday Best:

Mr. Cowell, for actually wearing something other than black… even if it was grey.

This stylish woolen jersey dress was featured in Karen Millen’s Dresses&Cocktails event as a key piece for this years party season. The wool jersey dress incorporates a trimmed woven wool flannel neckline and skirt edged with gunmetal eyelets.

Karen Millen is renowned for creating classical, elegant style evening wear that is suited to formal occasions such charity balls, rather then a less formal occasions such as a night of cocktails in a bar with friends. This is what makes this eyelet dress so appealing, it is a welcome change from the formal style evening dresses, as it is much more relaxed, stylish and on trend, which will appeal to a slightly younger shopper. We love it!

We’ve all seen how successful Sir Phillip has been in merging collaborations between his mighty highstreet giant Topshop, and the likes of Barbara Hulinicki, Celia Bertwell and, how could we forget, Kate Moss. But we weren’t too sure how Italian sports and dance wear brand ‘Freddy’ would fair among fashion’s fierce critics.

On paper it would seem Topshop are at risk of alienating their loyal customer base with this range of comfy separates. Let us not forget the impact ‘WAG fashion’ has had on modern culture. The largely negative exposure of velour tracksuits was at the forefront of the ‘chav’ revolution, ultimately leading to a backlash against the concept of casual sportswear.  Yet Freddy is a brand which contradicts the ‘chav’ stereotype so widely associated with sportswear, supplying to the Royal Ballet, La Scala and also the Italian Olympic team.

Perhaps as the consumer we need to confront the snobbery which plagues fashion, and choose to judge only on the quality of the product. Freddy for Topshop is a range made up of luxurious soft chenille and jersey, and is enhanced with subtle detailing. Not a diamante in sight. As we know quality comes at a price, but the entire range is priced between £35 and £45, perfectly within the means of your typical Topshop shopper.

But the burning question is; how do Topshop fans rate this ‘fresh take on modern sports apparel’?

So, we’ve had Diva, Big Band, Rock, Movie, Queen and now, George Michael night… with Susan Boyle and Mariah Carey – of course! Totally makes sense.

Standing out like Anna Wintour at the January sales, Cheryl’s custom-made outfit was, by far, the optical thief of the night. Her hot-pink Giles Deacon dress was accessorized with black pixie-boots and hair bow. Cheryl’s life-sized Ken doll accessory unfortunately couldn’t make it.

Dannii looked a vision, as is becoming the norm. Extra Christmas bonus for your stylist this year, Dannii, she really deserves it. Sorry… what’s that, Dannii? You dress yourself? Well, double thumbs up. Cheryl, we love you, but take some notes.

Now that the numbers are dwindling, is more effort being applied to the styling? Exhibit A: Lloyd. Last week, more attention was sought in making Lloyd stand out from the pack. This week, we see our little heartthrob with jeans tucked into boots and cropped hair – again, a step out from his previous comfort zone.

Stacey’s beach waves were back for a second week. Her dress was fine, nothing more than that.

Now, say what you like about Jed, but surely the most attention-to-detail had been dished up here. Tonight’s ensembles were good: the white suits, the neon trims, the retro Katherine Hamnett ‘Choose Life’ slogan shirts, the high-tops – what was not to like? Only disappointment was the lack of rolled-up sleeves.

Danyl was also looking good. Yes, this Ice-queen is warming to the do.

We were let down by Olly, again. It was beyond boring. Also, if you insist on fastening all of the    buttons on your shirt, you had better make sure said shirt fits correctly; too many flashes of skin through gaping holes for my liking.

I think I’m done with Joe. I think he’s had enough, too, as he was adamant about keeping his coat on during his performance. Oh, I get it, now; The life-sized Ken to his mentor Cheryl’s Barbie. Not a well-dressed accessory, but a staple one all the same.

In the naughty corner this week…

Dermot, do you own suits in EVERY possible shade of grey?

Sunday Best:

Go on, The Boyle! You scrubbed up nice.

On Monday, as am I am sure you have all been made aware, another H&M designer collection was launched. The Jimmy Choo collection debuted, and it caused a mass frenzy across the world! People camped out overnight for the chance to get inside and get there hands on some Jimmy Choos before anyone else. The shocking thing to me is that people are actually suprised by this! Why? People will do almost anything to feel as though they belong within an IT crowd.

I can see why these garments and footwear collections are so desirable, as the average high street shopper would be unlikely to beable to afford to purchase the real Mc Coys and the feeling of owning a pair of Jimmy Choos would be an amazing feeling for many fashion dedicates. But to many that is the problem they are not the real Mc Coys. In a exclusive pair of Choos or a designer dress, you get an instant buzz, you stand out from the crowd in your one off piece and the quality is usually exceptional and second to none. Whereas with the collaborations collections they are mass produced,  which usually results in poor craftsmanship and quality, leaving customers with what can often look like cheap knock offs. In many peoples opinions mass production collaborations, takes the edge of designer pieces/names simply because they become too mainstream and accessible.

On the plus side there are several benefits to the designer and high street collaborations, when in a time of economic crisis, as they increase number of customers, in-store spend, general high street sales and media coverage, which the industry needs and welcomes at this difficult time.

Every week, we initiate a beeline for the judges’ jugulars. This week, however, it came to light that a certain someone has been slipping through the net… Dermot, you can run, but you can’t hide. It’s week 6 and we’ve finally caught up with you. PLEASE DO SOMETHING WITH YOUR HAIR!!!

Speaking of hair, were our eyes deceived, or was Louis flaunting a soupcon of styling product in his tresses? Must be the Jedward influence. Is it just me, or are those two becoming annoyingly charming?

Looking glam and on trend for Queen night, Cheryl Cole sparkled in a navy Alexander Wang number. Could have done without the Croydon Facelift, though. A simple up-do would have sufficed.

Dannii stuck to her favourite recipe of floaty, floor-length gown and classic bobbed hair, accessorised with a chunky statement necklace. Once upon a time, these pop princesses battled it out for the top style slot, but recently, Dannii has effortlessly been out-shining Cheryl.

Saturday’s entertainment commenced with a surprising boundary push from non other than Jamie. Even the Cuban heels didn’t offend me. Full marks for wearing something other than jeans and hippy beads.

Also, a surprising wardrobe check for Lloyd, this week. Although the leather trouser and checked-shirt arrangement may not suit all appetites, it was nice to see Lloyd in something different.

Now, I may have to backtrack a little, here. I marked Olly down as a little style gem and one to watch, but felt his styling this week was lacking; we’d seen it before. If it wasn’t for the appearance of the finger-brace, I’d have been bored.

Joe: Grey hooded waistcoat and grey shirt do not an outfit make. Dull, dull, and dull.

What is there to say about Jedward? Are we witnessing style icons in the making? Answers on a postcard, please.

There was a nice juxtapose going on with Stacey’s appearance; her hair said day at the beach, whilst her dress said night at the opera. It shouldn’t have worked, but it did.

Danyl channelled an 80’s vibe in a black bomber-style jacket complete with Miami Vice rolled sleeves. Nice to see a bit of growth on the old mane, although, I still need some convincing.

In the naughty corner this week…

Dermot’s hair. Now, sit there and think about what you’ve done.

Sunday Best

Cheryl, you’re back in the race. Looking good in Richard Nicoll AW ‘10

Alexander McQueens showcased his Alien shoes at his Spring 2010 show, since the designer and his office’s have been inundated with requests for the Alien Shoes. Women are actually wanting to wear these!! Whilst others are simply wanting ”to buy them as art pieces”.

It is not suprising that the first woman to be seen sporting these ‘unearthy’ shoes was style monster and McQueens number one fan, Lady Gaga, in her latest Blader Runner-esque, Bad Romance video. The Alien shoes actually fit in very well in futuristic, mesmerising video which she confesses has stemmed from the product of her “weirdest and most psychotic ideas”.

Thankfully, it doesn’t sound like the Alexander McQueen is releasing the shoes to the masses,  but instead  he and his label are considering auctioning them off for charity.

With party season hot on our heels its time for girls to make their most important purchase of the year, in the form of the perfect party dress.

Here’s the lowdown on 3 of this seasons hottest party trends.

Shine On

Sparkle this party season in sequins, shiny metallics, glistening liquid-shine fabrics.  A sequin/sparkled number is perfect for those who want to liven things up and step away from the traditional little black dress look.

picture-14

The Vixen in Violet

Autumnal berry hues were seen all over the catwalks this A/W and are set to make an appearance in many a Christmas shopping bag this year. Think intense mulled wine and vibrant violets tones.  For the perfect look team with a pair of killer black heels, and accessories with a winter hue statement necklace.

picture-24

Black is Back

It’s the return of party season, which brings along the return of the little black party dress, which are a plenty in high street and designer stores up and down the country, with a perfect style for everyone. To create depth and to break up black, layer and quilt with a variation of fabrics such as leathers and velvets.

Wear with chunky silver accessories and bold black heels for the ultimate party look.

We have Children In Need and stateside have Women In Need. To contribute to the campaign, a series of top industry names have designed paper mache homes, that are being auctioned off this week for the cause.  Celebrities and sports stars were also asked to custom-design a paper mache houses based around the theme “Home is where the heart is,”.

Check out the fabulous dream houses designed by the likes of Vera Wang, Bobbi Brown and Isaac Mizrahi. I absolutely love all of them, but here are my favs.

picture-23

My pick: Looks

I’m sure that I am not the only girl out there who would love to live in this Isaac Mizrahi house, it has a great aura about it. It’s fun, fabulous and energetic.

picture-31

My pick : Practicality

This is perhaps THE most practical house ever for woman kind, made entirely from compacts from Bobbi Browns collection. It’s adorable.

picture-4

My pick: Festive Feeling

Vera Wang’s dream house may conjure up ideas of a lil white chapel in Vegas, but to me it would be the ideal Christmas holiday home, very Christmassy indeed. I love the sequins and the sparkles, so pretty, just like a snowy winters morning.
