Harvey Nichols Out Do Selfridges, Again!

The Verdict

By Ryan Cooper-Brown

Part of my job is to keep you all updated on all areas of fashion, yes even high end so I dragged my bones out of the house this week for you.  My first port of call was the annual A/W Selfridges fashion show. Before I start I would like to get this off my chest, I had to actually ring up for an invite I know I know Im vain it’s a southern thing!

Back to the event, Selfridges to me has only ever been able to run student nights and Thursday proved me right. It wasn’t just peoples attendance that was lacking, there was little atmosphere, drinks or that must have ‘I feel cool to be here vibe’. The bread and butter; the A/W cat walk show was amateur, bad models and bad styling.  Although there was Alexander McQueen coming down the catwalk most of the men’s suits were two sizes too big. When it comes to the womenswear, it seemed the Selfridges team had lost their love for fashion as it wouldn’t have been out of place in a Dorothy Perkins store.

“shockingly fitted clothes”

Now the winner, once again the team at Harvey Nichols did not let us down, aside from being greeted at the door with champagne, comfortable seats and a top notch goody bag the show was fun and sexy.  After the usual “Hi’s and “I love your bag” three glasses of amber nectar and we were ready to do what we came here for ‘being the best fashionista's we can be’.

The Cat walk

The show was split into ten different categories including the ‘English Gentleman’ ‘Gothic Romance’ and ‘Double Trouble’.   It was no surprise to see brands such as Christian Louboutin, For All Mankind, Gucci, Dolce and Gabbana and Matthew Williamson strutting down the catwalk.

The catwalk styles ranged from ready to wear to high end classic designs, although I find it hard to shop in Harvey Nichols if you’re serious about keeping up with the trends this winter Harvey Nichols could be the one.
