Pieces of Eight.
We hopped on a plane to Leeds this Week
By Sarah Graham
Pieces of Eight, a unique store featuring the collections from seven hand picked young designer graduates from the surrounding area’s art and design colleges.
Nestled in between retail heavyweights All Saints and Replay, Pieces of Eight is the latest addition to the £260 million Clarence Dock development in Leeds. Just outside of the crane clad city centre, Clarence Dock – opened originally by Gok Wan – encompasses all things retail, restaurant and leisure and hopes to establish itself as the new-fangled urban quarter within the style conscious city.
The emphasis on apparel is responsible for the concept behind Pieces of Eight. Over the next four weeks this collaboration of young designers will be able to showcase their exclusive designs, ranging from extrovert knits and bold prints to charming dresses with eccentric patterns.
With the collections suspended from the ceiling by industrial chains, Pieces of Eight’s interior plays on a minimalist theme. The visually digestible layout, combined with the eclectic concoction of clothing, creates an aesthetic impact verging on a cross between an art installation and the Mad Hatter’s tea party.
Rebecca Saxton, one of the resident designers commented, “The boutique is quirky and gives the collection good exposure. It’s a great mix of different things.”
Pieces of Eight is an undisputed clothing gem with a distinctive edge, and should be, without a doubt, on every fashion forward shoppers’ list of destinations on the run up to Christmas.
