Harvey Nichols Fashion Spring/Summer 09
By Amy W
Last Thursday, Harvey Nichols’ stylish shoppers left the recession outside as they entered into a world of luxury in store. Showcasing their Spring Summer collection Harvey Nichols transformed their accessories hall in to a fashion jungle with elephants, giraffes, snakes and tropical birds all decorating the catwalk. Whether or not there will be a stampede to buy the clothes, is another question. With such a hefty price tag on the items it’s time to get saving if you want to look great this season!
Guests at the event seemed to include Alex Curran wannabe’s (not sure whether that had to do with the Liverpool invasion of Manchester that weekend), the usual press, and stylish shoppers all keen to take note of the seasons biggest trends.
The fashion show was opened by fashion designer Amanda Wakeley whose clothes regularly adorn the bodies of many A List celebrities and from her Spring Summer collection, it's not difficult to see why.
Focusing on the established trends for this summer’s womens-wear, New Nudes, Colour Blocking, Tribal, Grecian Goddess and Asymmetric – Harvey Nichols showcased a stunning collection, elegantly put together by their team of Personal Shoppers.
As much as I am now sick of the tribal theme and the fringing that seems to be as existent as Uggs, Harvey Nichols provided a unique and upper class image to this trend. Unlike the high street tribal trend, Harvey Nichols portrayed sophistication, expense and style - Something you would see on the women of Monaco rather than on the streets of Manchester. The Roberto Cavalli kaftan was by far the best outfit; at £910 this stunning kaftan oozes summer with an edge of sex appeal. Teamed with big sunglasses, Balenciaga bag and Michael Kors shoes, the outfit was flawless, even if it did break the bank!
What’s a fashion show without addressing one of this season’s biggest trends -Colour blocking. A huge hit on the catwalk with the likes of Alexander Wang, Matthew Williamson, Luella and John Galliano, this vivid ‘mix and match’ of brights brings a whole new image to your wardrobe, creating a confident and dynamic look for summer. Harvey Nichols sent a rainbow of electric and stunning colours down the catwalk, from a striking blue Lanvin organza dress, to an orange Joseph silk georgette dress and a purple Amanda Wakeley draped chain dress. Everything a girl would need to look fabulous this year.
My favourite trend for men was the Dark Night. Forget Batman and his cape, this is the look of the super sharp and sexy Bruce Wayne. Dark suits and open collars combined to create a relaxed and sophisticated mood. Black and Navy are also a must for this trend. Harvey Nichols introduced us to this mix match of colour, teaming Navy suits with open black shirts or vice versa.
Overall the fashion show was flawless, even the prices didn’t seem to affect the mood of the shoppers –I am pretty sure there will be a stampede to the Amanda Wakeley collection.
I’m already on my way!
