From Burberry with Love
Contributing blogger Fashion Fiend Daily reports from London Fashion Week on Burberry Prorsum's A/W 10-11 collection
Yesterday I sat nervously waiting with excitement and trepidation in front of my laptop, running questions over and over in my mind. Will it work? How will they re-invent the brand this time? What will they be wearing? It was the event every fashion addict had been waiting for- Christopher Bailey’s latest collection for Burberry Prorsum.
This unique visionary was taking a giant risk by taking Burberry to the next level this season. It was the first time that any fashion house had used the internet to stream their catwalk shows live to the entire world.
Burberry were adding extra pressure by not only streaming it in 2D globally across the internet but also in glorious 3D to live audiences at five private events in New York, Paris, Dubai, Tokyo and Los Angeles. Whoever came up with the well-known phrase ‘save the best till last’ were definitely referring to Burberry.
My stomach churned with excited and anticipation. This was one Fashion Fiend who was finger-drummingly nervous. 25 minutes later than schedule it began, the models appeared. Was it worth the wait? Oh yes indeed!
Christopher Bailey has excelled himself not only in bringing this 154 year old brand racing ahead by using modern technology but the show was stupendous.
The stereo-typical trench coat had taken a slight back-seat and instead there was a distinct salute to Burberry’s historic connections with the armed forces. From aviator jackets adorned with large buckles to double-breasted military jackets in a stunning vivid shade of blue. Bailey kept the collection simple yet wearable. It was not over the top or garish instead every piece was accessible and well-crafted.
The collection combined Victorian lace and contrasted it against big chunky military boots and cropped jackets to create a strong yet feminine look. I personally love the flash of rich mustard yellow and deep purple colours in the accessories against the neutral shades of brown and green jackets. It made the pieces much more striking and stylish. The use of thigh high boots was also a key piece in the collection and is set to be one of the key trends next winter.
The collection had a very tactile quality- the combination of butter soft leather and giant white fur coats created an image of durability and warmth. Perfect for our current cold winter months.
Christopher Bailey has, once again, silenced any critics. I can guarantee there will be a lot of designers and fashion houses that will follow his leadership and use the internet to stream their shows live next year. He is a certainly a leader among men in the Fashion world.
