The Fashion Invasion
Lately I have become tired of the re-runs and re-hashes of various TV shows on the box. So, instead I have been switching over to the music channels, hoping they will distract me until something better comes on.
However, yesterday I was actually shocked by what gyrated in-front of my eyes. Has anyone else noticed that high fashion seems to have invaded the music industry?
I was watching the latest video from the pop machine Lady Gaga when I jumped off the sofa in shock. Wait a moment! Is that Lady Gaga wearing -Alexander Mc Queen in her video! This cannot be!
Yes, you have heard me correctly ladies and gentlemen; the fame monster was adorned (quite literally) from head to toe in his spring/ summer 2010 designs. From the opening sequence she is captured in an elegant Alexander McQueen black dress. The video then goes on to show Gaga dancing in various elaborate costumes. My favourite outfit was the striking gold dress with the unique vertigo inducing armadillo heels. It looks painfully stylish. This pop icon looked like she had strolled right out of the spring/ summer 2010 catwalk and straight into her video. What’s more, it’s simply outstanding!

However, this isn’t the only lady performer to go gaga about the latest 2010 trends, rising star Ellie Goulding has also taken a leaf out of Lady Gaga’s book. In her debut single, ‘Starry Eyed’ she moves and shakes in a stunning white shift dress designed by Edinburgh born, Holly Fulton. Fulton’s unique designs with their futuristic qualities suit the song choice perfectly. Currently there seems to be an ever growing number of musicians who are dressing from top to bottom in high-end fashion for their music videos and this trend seems to be spreading fast.
This isn’t the first time that the two industries have joined forces. In the past many designers have created unique outfits for musicians. The perfect example of this is the collaboration between Madonna and the great French designer, Jean Paul Gaultier. It was Gaultier who designed the costumes for Madonna’s Blonde Ambition Tour back in the 90’s and who created the infamous ‘cone-bra’.

We are constantly reminded on a daily basis through various advert campaigns that musicians repeatedly cross over into the realm of fashion. Chanel for example has recently appointed Lily Allen as an ambassador to advertise their latest handbag collection ‘Cocoon’. You can see her on bill boards and in magazine adverts all across the country posing outrageously with the puffy padded handbag. (Honestly I’d rather have the Chanel Classic 2.55 Quilted bag any day!)
However, this latest endeavour to push current fashion trends into the public domain through the use of music videos is a new tactic. It begs the question- who exactly is behind this? Is it the fashion labels themselves who are trying to push their brands further by influencing a younger audience, or maybe it’s the stylist who are competing against one another or could it even be the musicians themselves?
Who knows, however this does appear to be another way in which fashion is becoming more accessible in our modern society. Music videos, in a way, are becoming like mini- fashion catwalks and I honestly think it’s only going to develop and grow over time. How it will shape the future of the fashion industry and catwalk shows is still uncertain.
However, this Fashion Fiend isn’t complaining too much because it allows me to enjoy the invasion from the comfort of my living room. Sitting and admiring the beautiful designs on MTV whilst having a hot brew and a hob-nob biscuit. Brilliant!
