Jean-Pierre Braganza
Dark, erotic with tantalizing insinuations of sadomasochism; Jean-Pierre Braganza’s recent collection ‘Cylonatron’ has been inspired through the linear structure of Bauhaus architecture and science fiction.
Emphasis on razor sharp symmetry, chiselled tailoring and panelling has been a palpable premise throughout the designer’s previous work and the Autumn Winter 2010/11 articulated an offering that was analogous to that of ‘Psychadelactica’ , ‘Totempyrean’ and ‘ Hadronexus’.
Jean-Pierre identifies his collections through one-word synonyms that conjure up imagery of how his inspirational direction may have transpired into design. The descriptive entitlements which titivate his collections are neither one word nor two; however existing collectively, these fabricated metaphors become ocular to the spectator when presented alongside Braganza’s work.
Neologisms are often directly attributable to certain individuals and Braganza’s combining of words are no different developing a unique idiolect contiguous to him and his dauntingly intimate designs.
Braganza however develops the collection first then bequeaths a title encapsulating the mood and inspiration. Futurism being his main fixation- is translated through a dark wearable offering where stalwart tailoring is at its epitome. Jagged oblique shapes grace lapels, shoulders and necklines emphasising the angular bone structure of futuristic female warriors. Chiselled tailoring is defined and cultured with loosely twisted fabric over-pieces. Cut-outs shapes engender the straight and parallel silhouettes, accentuating a distinctly recognisable signature throughout his collections.
Figure hugging panelling of matt black combined with shiny leather, chunky knitwear in mulberry and plum elevated autonomous power dressing to the sound of hard industrial music -and the finale; mini digitalised print dresses depicting molten metal, confirming Braganza’s intimation with all things science fiction.
