The Not So Fablous Fashion Of Sex And The City 2
The most fashionable film premier of the year started rolling around the UK on Friday 28th. MFN guzzled the Cosmos and strutted to the Odeon to bring you the fashion perspective on Sex And The City 2.
Before the billboards had even graced Manchester’s streets the city was whipped into an excited frenzy in anticipation of the new film. Harvey Nichols hosted Sex And The City themed dinner and drinks before escorting attendees to The VIP Gallery viewing area at The Odeon and most cinema goers followed suit by eating out before catching one of the completely sold out screenings.
On opening night The Printworks in Manchester was filled with incarnations of the famous four, ladies and gents of all ages dolled up in cocktail dresses and bow ties, ready for the big screen event. Manchester did New York proud as cinema goers were dressed to perfection and suitably giddy from Cosmopolitan fuelled pre-partying.
The fabulous fashion of Sex And The City 2, however was not quite so fabulous. After backlash from critics of the first movie who believed the wealth of the characters was too forced, writers pulled the plug on the character’s disposable incomes and hit them hard with the global recession. The film in many ways seems to be a downgrade of its predecessor, Carrie’s famous Apple Mac has been replaced with a Hewlett-Packard and she and Mr Big have moved from their Penthouse to an inferior apartment a couple of floors below. The ladies, whilst still looking exceptional even in Burkas, did not show off their labels as much as in the first film and for this reason the true fashion sparkle of Sex And The City has dwindled. For a wardrobe effort that has been reported to have cost US$10 million alone, the clothing was a slight disappointment and outfit choices didn’t seem propel the story as it did in the series and the previous film.
Although, style was not all lost to the credit crisis and true Mancunian shoppers will be pleased to hear that, in a nod toward budgeting, vintage played a large role in the film from Carrie’s anniversary present for Big to Charlotte’s paint stained Valentino skirt. It would seem the message from the film’s wardrobe mistress, Patricia Field, is that Sex And The City fans should head off to Best Vintage and bypass Selfridges, at least for a short while anyway. Despite being a down-turn downer on the fashion front and the rumoured 80s flash-backs being nothing more than a mere glance into to past, the film has proved its worth at the UK Box Office taking GBP£2.1 million on opening night alone.
