Glasses – to wear or not to wear?
Glasses?
By contributor Desiree Todd
Personally, I’ve worn specs/gleeks/glasses whatever we choose to call them pretty much since I mastered the art of joined up writing and I still wore my hair in pigtails with matching ribbons. The current trend for oversized black frames is still going strong –Alexa Chung added a pair to her outfit for the South Bank Show at the Dorchester recently. Is the intellectual look on the up?
By wearing such frames we are making a statement of being individual yet at the same time adopting and following a trend…Nicole Ritchie, Fearne Cotton, etc. the list goes on. Yet it’s not a trend everyone can pull off, nor attempt to. The wearers of such frames are a chosen few, already slightly quirky; the glasses serve to enhance their overall look.
I somehow can’t imagine Jade Goody perfecting the look in quite the way Alexa does. After all, intellectual girls are often more adventurous in bed, so they say….Having donned a variety of styles and brands over the years, certain brands today are more than hitting the mustard in terms of design and style. Cutler and Cross, Mykita, Pro Design, Oliver Goldsmith, Berlinger, Alek Paul, to name but a few will adorn your visage in a way you never thought possible.
We own numerous pairs of jeans and shoes so why not glasses? T’would be fashion Siberia to wear the same style of jeans for three seasons in a row – so why exist with just one pair of specs? The intellectual pair, the quirky pair, the sexy secretary pair, the list goes on.Have I ditched my contacts and glasses in favour of Laser eye surgery – not a chance. When I’ve worn glasses for this long not only are they part of ‘me’ but also they give me the opportunity to change my look whenever I feel like it. Plus, there is something comforting about taking your glasses off last thing at night, the world ebbs into a blur truly distancing you off from the day’s stresses and hassles.
Gone are the days where we strived to look the same and fit the mould of the norm. Today fashion is about embracing what makes us individual and unique-fast fashion is losing its appeal as its devotees totter around in identikit outfits and homogenous high street bargains. Glasses offer the chance to accessorise your look depending on your outfit, your mood, or your situation.
So if you don’t have a couple of grand in the depths of your quilted Marc Jacobs Bonnie bag or man bag to invest in this seasons luxurious designer outfits, fear not, a new pair of specs will offer good value, add some interest, update your look and obviously help you see the world a little bit clearer. It often seems to me that the very people who don’t need to wear glasses are the ones who want to.
