Heaven Or Heel?
HEAVEN OR HEEL?
By Desiree Todd
Having worn flats religiously on my walks to work – (it didn’t take long to realise that pretty heels and the cobbled streets of Castlefield are not overly symbiotic), it now seems that flats/ballet pumps are equally as problematic to us. Although they obliterate the need for pedicures and still offer a glimpse of toe cleavage, recent studies have shown they offer no structural support at all, resulting in fallen foot arches and muscle pain. They also have the slight downfall of having weather dependant issues and being a bit old hat. So… if we are dammed in either, lets at least opt to wear the sexier of the two and follow Gwyneth and SJP in their choice of killer heels. The 6-inch $650 Alexander McQueen’s Gywenth wore recently whilst promoting ‘Iron Man’ in London caused such excitement, that they sold out within days in Selfridges. My latest lust is Nicholas Kirkwood’s ‘Dragon fly’-a menacingly seductive peep toe sling back in lilac and silver lizard. He fuses architecturally inspired contours with aerodynamic shapes, alongside a range of unusual materials.
‘Decorating for the sake of decorating is a really old-fashioned notion, I'm more about form and function. Some of my heels look quite aggressive, but they are always feminine – not girly, you won't find any bows or diamonds.’ ‘High heels should be worn all the time, no exceptions,…except at the beach maybe,’ says Kirkwood.
To avoid resembling Bambi’s first skittering steps, it is advisable to practice walking around the house before you venture out in public. Be aware of your limitations in such shoes – they are not designed for running or getting anywhere in a hurry. If ‘car-to-bar’ even proves too much for your throbbing soles then maybe they should exist solely as your ‘bed shoes’. Aptly named by Mr. Louboutin himself, his 6-inch heels are ‘so high you can only lie down in them’. Yep, fashion has truly trumped function. Who said shoes were only made for walking in….?
