Proven at last - Shopping is good for you!

If you are a serious shopper you could cancel your gym membership! A recent study has found that the average female shopper burns 200 calories per shopping trip, which amounts to 12,120 calories a year. Men hit the shops with a little less stamina burning 8928 calories a year.  Researchers found that the average woman will walk 2.02 miles on each shopping spree. Going on five shopping trips a month means that adds up to 10.1 miles or 121.2 miles a year.  The study was carried out by Golden Square Shopping Centre in Warrington to coincide with their ‘Get Up and Go’ initiative to help shoppers drop a dress size.  Ian Cox, Marketing Manager at Golden Square Shopping Centre said: “Traipsing around the shops might not seem like a work out but this research proves that it can have the same effect as a trip to the gym.”

The Rise and Rise of Manchester Retail Sector

Manchester has superseded Birmingham as England’s second city from the perspective of most retailers.  Contributing the city’s retail strength has been the opening of the Arndale extension and the addition of independents including The General Store and Jeffery West.  Retail confidence in Manchester is only set to improve given developments to the Greater Manchester transport system and up and coming store openings including Nike and Camper.  Over at the Trafford Centre, retailers are being kept on their toes with rental growth of 6.7% in one year. Rent currently stands at £400 per square foot.
