Eric Musgrave discusses with The Fashion Network how to succeed in the independent fashion sector as a small business

Eric, what are you up to these days?

I am a consultant to Fashion Association of Britain and, among other things, I am helping FAB members get opinion columns into Drapers, WWB, MWB, Lingerie Buyer etc.

Could you tell me a bit about the partnership between Fashion Association of Britain and

The Fashion Association of Britain and (YBS) both exist to promote and encourage the independent fashion sector. While they do very different jobs, they make perfect partners to host a series of networking events around the country. The one in Manchester on Wednesday May 16 is the first in the series.

What does the FAB Networking Evening offer retailers?

The evening is aimed at independent fashion retailers from any sector (men’s, women’s, kids’, footwear, lingerie, mainstream, designer…) and any supplier who wants to sell to independent shops. The biggest advantage of attending will be the chance to meet and talk to other like-minded shop owners, manufacturers, designers and the rest. In addition, attendees will hear about all the many advantages of joining FAB – this national association has a huge range of services and benefits designed to make an independent fashion retailer’s life easier, more efficient and more profitable. Its subscription levels are kept low because it represents more than 7,500 independent businesses, with more than 1,100 of them specialising in fashion.

We hope that the attendees will tell both FAB and YBS what else we could be doing to assist them. The whole evening will be informal and relaxed.

Could you describe what services provides for free?

YBS is a great new service that allows brands to showcase their collection online 24/7, 365 days a year. Again, its rates for brands are low. Membership for retailers to look at the featured collections is absolutely free. YBS enables retailers who have to spend a lot of time in their shops the opportunity to source new and established brands that are backing the independent sector.
